Contemporary English defines
Understanding as the
ability to perceive the intended meaning of (words, a language or a speaker), comprehension,
interpret or view something in a particular way; sympathetic awareness or tolerance (pity, sympathy, compassion).
But in the Hebrew language from where our subtexts were taken, the word translated understanding is
tâbûwn (
pronounced taw-boon’), which means ‘
intelligence’, by implication ‘
an argument’; by extension ‘
discretion’ (
the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offence or revealing confidential information).
Tâbûwn is a wisdom term that represents the act of wisdom (Job 26:11); the faculty of wisdom (Exo.31:3); the object of wisdom (Pro.2:3) and personification of wisdom (Pro.8:1).
It can be seen as perceptive insight with the ability to rightly assess. It is a kind of deep, distinct knowledge.
It carries the ability to see the light in God’s light (Ps.36:9), perceive the intended meaning of scriptures (Ps.119:125), and discern times. (Dan.12:10 1Chro.12:32)
Understanding is affected by the attitudes of men (Matt.13:14-15). The Lord Jesus was endowed with the Spirit of understanding, so He was able to accommodate His carnal disciples and tolerate the offences of the religious Jews (Isa.11:1-2; Mk.9:33-37; 10:35-45; 12:13-27). Lack of understanding is the bane of many broken homes, sour relationships, disintegrated business settings, and destabilized assemblies.
Apostle Paul prayed that the Lord would grant understanding to his flock. (Eph.3:16-18; 1:17-18; Col.1:9-12)
Understanding
is never solitary but always tangoes with wisdom and so births the dividends of wisdom (Job 28:22; Pro.8:18,21,35). Understanding is acquired through
obedience to God’s word (Ps.111:10) and
prayers. (1Chro.22:11-12; 1Kgs3:7-12)
Understanding will enable one to make successful arguments with God, as did Moses and the Syrophenician woman, respectively. (Exo. 32:9-14; Mk.7:24-30; Isa.41:21)
Understanding the truth that we are joint heirs with Christ will make a believer bold to claim his inheritance and to resist the devil (Gal.3:29; Rom.8:17; 1Pet.5:8,9).
Understanding the fact that God gave us the ministry will make us appreciate that He is under obligation to give us an enabling environment, enabling resources and enabling status. (1Cor.9:7)
The God of justice will always stand for justice as He that sends on an errand must facilitate the work. (Jer.9:23,24; Ps.9:20; Exo.15:16)
To optimally enjoy the joy of jubilation, we must put on understanding by carrying the right attitude to the word of God, obeying the scriptures and praying for divine bestowal of the spirit of understanding. (Isa.11:2)
It must always be borne in mind that
understanding is the catalyst for establishment. (Pro.24:3)
