It was said to be a title of humanity and humility as the eternal Creator thereby expressed His birth through a woman.   Today, we shall also explore Jesus the Son of God under the following subheadings (A) The Meaning of the Designation Son of God (B) The Message from the designation (C) The Implication.
  • THE MEANING OF THE DESIGNATION, SON OF GOD
The term son(s) of God was used in the old testament writings for (i) descendants of Seth, the godly son of Adam (as some posit) or beings that had super human capabilities (Gen. 6:1-4), and angelic beings (Job 1:6-8, 2:1-3, 38:7).   In the New Testament, translators used the noun „son‟ as an expletive for one whose origin was directly from God and not through the womb of a woman, as in Adam (Lk. 3:38). It also stood for members of a class of believers that possess an appreciable measure of Christ’s nature/expressions (Rom. 8:14,19; Eph. 4:11-13; Gal. 4:6).   It was used of Jesus whom an angel announced and later God the Father publicly testified of (Matt. 3:17; 17:5; Lk. 1:35)   Jesus is the express image/impress of His substance/essence (Heb.1:3). So He said whosoever sees Me has seen the Father (Jn. 14:6-9). He informed His audience that He is distinct from the Father, and proceeded from Him (Jn. 13:3, 14:28, 16:28).   Now, though the Lord Jesus said that the Father is greater than Him-having stepped down to be mortal (Phil. 2:5-8), He showed that He remained in God’s class as reflected in the words that He used for “His prayer” in Jn. 16:25-28.   In chapter 16 verse 26, the verb “pray” as He always used for Himself came from the Greek word “erotao” which suggests that a petitioner is on the same footing of equality or familiarity that lends authority to the request with the person whom he entreats (Jn. 14:16, 17:9,15,20) which is different from prŏsӗuchŏmai (pronounced pros-yoó-khom-ahee) as in Lk. 11:1,2; 18:1,10, 22:40,46; 1 Cor. 14:13,14,15 where the petitioner is supplicating.   So His Sonship depicts His position as being in God’s class having a seemless access to the Father such that the Father cannot say no to His request.
  1. B) THE MESSAGE FROM THE DESIGNATION
The designation „son of God‟ which Angel Gabriel announced (Lk. 1:35) and Satan challenged (Lk. 4:3), the Father publicly declared (Matt. 3:17) and prophetically revealed through Peter (Matt. 16:16,17), and Jesus Himself magnanimously claimed (Lk. 22:66-71), which accords and resonates with His pre-existence to His incarnation and the creation (Jn. 1:1-4, 10:30-33, 17:5-24; 8:56-58 cp. Ex. 3:6,14; Ps. 2:7; 45:6,7; Isa.   7:14; 9:6; Mic. 5:2), teaches or indicates that whatsoever He said or promised cannot be revoked or successfully resisted (Matt. 24:35) and whatever He identifies with is guaranteed to succeed (2 Cor. 1:20; Mk. 2:28; Matt. 28:19).   He is currently seated at God’s right hand far above all creatures (Eph. 1:21-23, Acts 7:56, Mk. 16:19).   As God’s only Son, He enjoys an exclusive relationship with the Father and possesses the capacity to bring others unto sonship or membership of the divine family (Jn. 1:14-18,12, 11:52, Gal. 4:5, Rom. 8:15,16,17)   (C) THE IMPLICATION   Anybody that knows about this incontestable position of Lord and proceeds to live in unbelief, doubt or fear is an offence to the Lord (Matt. 8:23-26, 14:23-31; 16:21-23, Heb. 2:1-3; 10:35-38, Rev. 21:8)   On the other hand, anybody that embraces His Sonship shall be like a house built on a rock (Matt. 7:24,25) and a tree planted in a well irrigated area (Ps. 1:3).   Let us therefore approach the throne of Grace with boldness and claim what He has paid for (Rom. 8:31-32, Heb. 4:16).
