Our highlights are on how weak Joseph was duly metamorphosed to a warrior; a feeble God fearing young lad was transformed to a fearless prudent administrator. Joseph’s story is one of the Bible stories that give great consolation and strength to pilgrims navigating through turbulent waters.   It shows how God can transport a just from weakness to wonder with layovers of temptation permitted to test the worthiness of the pilgrim for the intended honour; and on another hand, give him the opportunity to add accolades to his would-be-status.   We shall briefly examine the journey of this young man who was a man of values, self-discipline, compassion, purpose and humility, under the following:
  • Joseph’s Jelly State (B) Joseph’s Jubilee

  • JOSEPH’S JELLY STATE
A jelly is a soft semisolid, semi-transparent, somewhat elastic mass made of gelatin or pectin or a similar setting agent like agar. It is figurative of a state of weakness: physically, emotionally spiritually etc.   So, Joseph’s journey to the top began as a jelly: weak, nervous, fearful. He was a young dreamer envied by his elder brothers because of the favour he enjoyed and separation from their ungodly ways (Gen. 37:5-9, 49:22-23). This teaches that the world will resist anyone that chooses the way of righteousness (Jn. 15:18-21, 16:33) and envy a favoured person (Prov. 14:30; Eccl. 4:6; Jas. 3:16) When he visited them for their own good, they saw it as an opportunity to get rid of him and threw him into a pit by the intervention of Reuben. (Gen. 37:18-28)   He had a pit experience of loneliness in a dry and dark hole before he was handed over to slave traders at a price, who shackled him and took him to Egypt. (Gen. 37:25-28)
  • 105:17-18) His pathetic cry for mercy did not affect the callous hearts of the envious siblings, which things haunted them for a long time (Gen. 42:21-23)
Then, in Potipher’s house where he was basking in the favour of God, trial came from another direction using a different modality. The previous one was that of pain from siblings, but this time was pleasure-mode being adopted through a powerful figure – the wife of his boss. Physically weak (but spiritually strong) Joseph couldn’t rebuke her but fled abandoning his shirt and ended in jail (Gen. 39:1-20). After some years, he was brought out and given command. (Gen. 40:8-15,23, 41:1,9-14,25-43)   This exposure to harsh experiences, fleshly temptation and further stay in the prison where he anticipated speedy release after interpreting the butter’s dream, yet needed to wait for 2 years did some refining work in the life of jelly-natured Joseph. This truth was alluded to in Ps. 105:19 where it was said the word of God tried him. “Tried” came from the Heb. Tsâraph (pronounced tsaw-raf’) meaning to fuse (metal), to refine.   All these were divine providence (Ps. 105:17; Jer. 29:11). Every lover of God must know that any harsh program that he finds himself in, is part of his purification and equipping process (Isa. 43:7; 1Pt. 1:7). It will work out for one’s ultimate good (Rom. 8:28).
  • JOSEPH’S JUBILEE
After every night storm comes the bright morn; the darker the storm, the brighter the morn.   Joseph was discharged from the training when the Lord saw him qualified for the exalted seat. The mechanism of promotion was the Lord’s: giving the dream and interpretation and of course the solution (Gen. 41:14-37); and convincing Pharaoh to accept him. (Gen. 41:38-46)   The lily livered lad who was screaming for mercy when he was being shackled and led into slavery, had been transformed to a rugged ruler who will determine the destinies of multitudes. He was never to cry for help or mercy again but for compassion for the ignorant or for joy. (Gen. 43:30, 45:14)   Lover of God, there is joy at the end of your tunnel (Pa. 30:5, 126:1-6)   Joseph entered his jubilee and his nuclear family joined him in the land and his father ultimately gave him a gift that transcends Pharaoh’s promotion: The Prevailing Blessing (Gen. 49:22-26)   This blessing shall be analyzed in our next First Fruits Fasting Exercise (God willing)   Joseph’s life teaches us of the importance of integrity and faithfulness at all times; Trusting God in difficult times/situation; that God has plans for His people and does beyond their imagination and comprehension; and that if vision tarries, stay patient.   Your Jubilee is at hand, rise to pray.
