In the introductory session, we defined goodness as something good in the widest sense of the word. The word good as a noun means that which is morally right; righteousness; something beneficial or advantageous.
So
God’s goodness is a quality that reflects His moral rightness, righteousness, and benevolence (being well meaning).
The quality is the catalyst for our salvation and calls us to live according to His character (Rom.2:4). It is behind His guidance and provision of wisdom and strength, hence our sustenance.
This nature is limitless in manifestation as He relayed to Moses (Exo.33:19; 34:6) and so should be sought and optimally enjoyed by children of God.
To further aid the prospective beneficiary of God’s goodness, let us consider the following: There are two aspects of God’s goodness, vis a vis
- His universal goodness that allows the rains, sunshine, air, etc for all and sundry, as before stated (Matt. 5:45); (ii) His motivating goodness, which purpose is to motivate men into repentance (Rom. 2:4); including His special every moment Father-to-son goodness, enjoyed only by those who are truly His (cons. 1Kgs. 3:6; Ezr. 7:8-10, 8:18; Neh. 2:8; Ps. 23:6).
All the people of the world are already in the first category of His goodness. The second aspect of His goodness is also universal but occasional. It is this special aspect that we are focusing on.
The prospective beneficiary of this special Father-to-son goodness must have tapped God’s mercy and been forgiven, cleansed, and justified. For one thing, sin separates one from God (cons. Isa. 59:1-2; Ps. 7:11).
Further to the stated truth, the Lord has commanded His children to be good to all and sundry (Matt. 5:44-48; Gal. 6:10); to give/lend to those that ask them (Matt. 5:42); not to render evil for evil (1Thess. 5:15; 1Pet. 3:9), all in demonstration of goodness. He cannot command them and do otherwise. Rather, as He has commanded, so He does, but especially to those of His household (cp. Gal.6:10), as we have seen already. He Who has deposited all the natural resources in/on the earth for the sons of men to exploit (Gen. 1:28), surely will have His children exploit all the resources in Himself.
Having been quickened by the awareness of God’s righteousness in the expression of goodness, those who are His children indeed can henceforth plug into His goodness through their faith and confession as David did (Ps. 23:6; cons. Matt. 8:13; 9:29).
FOOD FOR THOUGHT/CHALLENGE:
From what has been stated before on the nature of God’s resources, it is evident that
GOD’S RESOURCES have sadly remained untapped for the following reasons:
- There are millions of unforgiving, uncleansed, and unjustified persons in the world because of not tapped His mercy. These consequently have not tapped His Father-to-son daily healing of mind and body, protection, provision, guidance, and other blessings of His special goodness as earlier stated (Pro.10:22).
- The thousands of His children who have some measure of each of these aspects of His special goodness have only ‘got drops of water from the oceans of water. Therefore, these resources are indeed untapped.
WHAT THEN WILL THE WATCHMAN DO IN HIS GENERATION TO EFFECT A CHANGE?
Tomorrow, we shall consider
Advancement and Attainment through the
Resource.
