In this series, we have explored the various titles or designations of the Lord Jesus, and drawn wonderful lessons that enriched our souls – increased our faith and positioned us for supernatural ascendency.
Today, we shall be looking at Jesus, the Son of man under the following points
(A) The meaning of the Appellation (B) The message (of Jesus) for the Appellation (C) The Implication of the Appellation.
(A) THE MEANING OF THE APPELLATION
The title or designation was sumptuously used by God to address His prophet, Ezekiel (Ezk. 2:1,3,6,8; 3:1,3,4,10,17,25; 4: 1:16; 5:1; 6:2; 7:2; 8:12,15,17; 33:2,7,10,12,24,30; 34:2; 35:2; 37:3)
The designation expressed the human nature of God’s messenger vis- a-vis the eternal nature of the Almighty Creator. It was not used in a derogatory manner.
Daniel, a contemporary of Prophet Ezekiel used the designation to describe the Messiah (Dan. 7:13-14). The cloud imagery that accompanied the Son of man represented the presence of God and attested to His divinity (Ex. 40:34 -35, 1 Kgs. 8:10-11, Ps. 97:2). This understanding made the ignorant Jews to accuse Jesus of blasphemy when He used the description for Himself and identified with the mysterious figure (Mk. 14:61-64).
During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus amply used the designation for Himself; but it was never used by God, an angel or informed man to address Him while He was on earth (Mk. 2:10,28, 8:31, 9:9,12,31, 10:33,45, 13:26,34), until after His ascension into heaven (Acts 7:56, Heb. 2:6, Rev. 1:13-15, 14:14).
For Jesus, it was a title of humanity and humility, whereas He is eternal, He gleefully identified with His then human nature to confirm that He
didn’t regret His decision to condescend (Jn. 1:1-4, 14, Col. 1:16, cp.
Heb. 2:9-11).
(B) THE MESSAGE OF JESUS FOR THE APPELLATION
There is always some purpose for every statement or action of the Lord.
And disciples are required to learn from Him inorder to prosper (Deut.
29:29, Pro. 25:2, Matt. 11:28,29, 28, Jn. 8:12,32).
Now, aside expressing His humanity and humility, when Jesus used the phrase ‘Son of man’ for Himself, He expressed the desire to identify Himself as the escatological Prophet Who like Ezekiel spoke about the destruction of the temple and Jerusalem and the restoration of the kingdom of Israel (Ezk. 4:1-7; 7:1-16, 26-27; 22:1-31; 40-48 cp. Matt. 19:27-28; 23:34-39; 25:14-30; Lk. 19:41-44).
So, He emphasized (with the designation) that He is from a woman and shares the traits of human beings. The designation existed within the context of His earthly activity (Mk. 2:10-28), suffering (Mk. 8:31, 9:31, 10:33), enthronement and authority (Mk. 13:26,34; 14:62; 8:38).
(C) THE IMPLICATION OF THE APPELLATION
The Appellation ‘Son of man’ reminds us of the purpose of Jesus’ earthly visit viz. to bring salvation to mankind (Gen. 3:15, Matt. 1:21) which will be achieved through His vicarious suffering and death (Isa. 53:3-5, 8-11; Jn. 1:26-29, 35-36; 2 Cor. 8:9).
Therefore the Creator became like His creature and gloried in the humble human nature so that He may redeem mankind from the clasps of Satan (Phil. 2:3-8, Heb. 2:9, 14-15).
Whosoever believes in Jesus is guaranteed salvation and the things that accompany salvation (Matt. 6:33, Jn. 3:14-16, 2 Cor. 8:9)
