Texts: Jn.1:9-11, 15:13
Topic: JESUS, THE RESSURRECTION AND THE LIFE
Subtexts: Jn. 11:25-26, 14:6
As we come to the last lap of the
First Fruits Fasting Fellowship of the year 2024, it is proper and profitable to cast our minds back to the diverse Great Friend from Heaven messages delivered, even the revelations from the Word and the numerous testimonies associated.
Furthermore, it is imperative to note that all promises given by the Lord are bound to be fulfilled at God’s time (1 Kgs. 8:56, Zech. 1:6, Matt. 24:35). There is neither delay nor impossibility in the lives of faithful children of God (Rom. 8:28, Matt. 19:26).
Today, we shall see the Great Friend from heaven as the Resurrection and The Life under the following subsections:
(A) Jesus, The Resurrection (B) Jesus, The Life.
A dictionary defined resurrection as
the action or fact of bringing somebody back to life, or the rising from the dead of an individual who still retains his personhood or individuality.
The New Testament recorded different kinds of resurrection namely
- Resurrection of the dead that will still die (Lk. 7:11-17, 8:40-56, Heb.
1:35) (ii)
Resurrection of bodies after the crucifixion of Christ (Matt.
27:50-53) (iii)
Resurrection of the just (Lk. 14:14, Jn. 5:28,29, 1 Cor.
15:38,40,53,54, 1 Thess. 4:13-17, Rev. 20:4-5) (iv)
Resurrection of damnation (Jn. 5:28,29, Rev. 20:11-14) (v)
Spiritual resurrection of sinners (Jn. 5:25,26).
Three Greek words were translated resurrection viz
egersis (Matt. 27:53) stresses the invigoration which raises the one up;
exanastasis (Phil. 3:11) stresses the state from which one was raised;
anastasis: this is the most frequently used word for resurrection.
Anastasis means a standing up again ie literally a resurrection from death; to cause to stand up on one’s foot. So
it stresses the final state of the one raised [upon his own feet]
It was prophesied by Simeon at the Child’s dedication: “Behold, this child is set for the fall (Gk. Ptosis means a crash ie downfall) and rising again (anastasis) of many in Israel…” (Lk. 2:34)
This prophesy aligns with the revelation of the Christ the Corner Stone Who would be rejected but turn to be the One to stabilize and accomplish the work-salvation (Ps. 118:22, Matt. 21:42, Acts 4:11, Eph. 2:20, 1 Pt. 2:6-8).
How then is Jesus the resurrection? He is the Author and principle (working basis) of resurrection (return to life) so, whosoever receives Him has come into life from the dead. Wherever He is, the power/potential to rise from the dead is available, and accessible through believing in Him (Jn. 5:21, 24-29, 11:25, Eph. 2:1-5, Rom. 6:4,5).
The resurrection does pave way for the enlivening of other aspects of life (Matt. 6:33).
- JESUS, THE LIFE (Jn. 5:24, 11:25, 14:6, 1 Jn. 5:11-12)
There are 3 different Greek words used for life namely: bios – the Physical life, psuche – the soulish life and zoe – the spiritual.
Bios has to do with the present state of existence; translated “living” (Lk. 8:43, 15:12,30, 21:4) and “ good” (1 Jn. 3:17);
Psuche is the animal sentient principle; breath of life, that vital force that animates the body and shows itself in breathing (Jn. 10:11,15,17, 12:25).
Zoe is the highest form of life (spiritual). It is life as God has it: life in the absolute sense. It is called eternal life or life everlasting. The adjective eternal/everlasting (aiōniŏs) was added to express its durability. It is not merely a principle of power and mobility, for it has moral associations which are inseparable from it: holiness and righteousness. The manifestation was seen in Jesus (Jn. 1:4, Jn. 10:10). It is received by those that believe in Him at regeneration (Jn. 3:15-20,36). It releases the character of God and enables them lead kingdom lives (Rom. 6:14, Eph. 4:1-3,17-32, 5:1 -7,15-22,25, Phil. 1:27, 2:14-15 1 Jn. 3:8,9). Anybody without this life is counted as dead and will be lost in eternity (cp. Lk. 9:59-60, Jn. 3:36, Rev. 13:8-10, 21:8).
Jesus is the Embodiment of zoe and freely gives it to those that believe (Eph. 2:8,9) . It is this life that recovers the dead, and sustains the resurrected. It can be copiously enjoyed through acts of righteousness in holiness (Jn. 10:10, Gal. 6:7- 8, Heb. 12:14). It has the potential to positively influence all aspects of one’s existence (Rom. 8:2,11).
Jesus is the resurrection and the Life therefore means that He is the Author and working basis of resurrection and God’s kind of life. Whosoever, believes in Him shall be raised from the dead, to enjoy abundance of life (Jn. 10:10).
