Text: Job 20:21
As had been earlier stated, our 21-day annual first fruit fasting exercise is for impartation –releasing information and grace. So our message today is to throw light on the fate of the wicked as stated by Zophar, one of the 3 visiting friends of Job, and apply our hearts unto wisdom (Ps.90:12).
We shall look at the 3 keywords:
Wealth, Wicked, and
Whacking.
WEALTH DEFINED
A standard dictionary defined wealth as follows: *The quality of profuse abundance; *Property that has economic utility: monetary value or exchange value. *An abundance of material possessions and resources *The state of being rich and affluent; having a plentiful supply of material goods and money.
A glance through the Hebrew lexicon shows Wealth to be of 2 kinds (a)
Abstract (
expressing a quality apart from an object) (b)
Concrete.
Abstract: ability to do something (Prov.5:10); a force whether of men, means or other resources (Zech.14:14).
Concrete: substance, riches, possession (Prov.18:11, 19:4; 13:11).
So the wealth of the wicked could be a physical substance like riches etc or some ability or force.
THE WICKED DESCRIBED
The most common Hebrew word used for the
“wicked” is
‘Rasha’ (
pronounced raw-shaw) as in Job 20:5 means ‘morally wrong’; concretely, an actively bad person. It is a legal term that could mean “guilty enough to deserve punishment”; it may carry the sense of being guilty for a crime (Exo.23:1, Prov.25:5, 17:15, 20:26).
So the wicked whose wealth would be whacked include, The morally wrong who is not living by the dictates of the conscience or whose conscience is seared –
untruthful, deceptive, secret sinner; the actively bad person who is known for his ungodliness:
ungodly boldness, vulgar and full of obscenities, occultic, oppressive, seductive, cheat, fraudulent, false accuser, immoral etc who may or may not belong to a church. Such are not saved. (Ps.9:17)
THE WHACKING OF THEIR WEALTH
There are many ways the righteous God recompenses the wicked: viz. (i)
By use of natural forces to neutralize their wealth (2Chro.20:37, Ps.48:7) (ii)
By the use of invisible forces (2Kgs.7:6-7, Gen.11:7,8) (iii)
By use of the mechanism of self–destruction (1Kgs.20:18, Isa.37:37,38 ) (iv)
By the use of the hands of the wounded or stronger (Job 20:5-10, 15, 18-22, 24-29; Jer.50:1-3). (v) Others (Ps.92:7)
Anyone, therefore, with any element of wickedness must repent, else he/she court’s God’s judgment. And the wise must learn not to be on equal terms in business with the wicked as Jehoshaphat did and suffered.
