Texts: 1Sam.17:45-52, 1Chro.20:4-8
INTRODUCTION:
As we behold the escalation of evil all around the neighbourhood and hear the news of terrifying events in the nation; it behoves every true child of God to know about the privileges that he is entitled to and the promises made by the Lord. The catalogue of challenges that come in sequences should not put any believer into despair.
The nation Israel had a like challenge from a notorious Philistine family in the city of Gath and could not be overrun by the mighty! The message shall be coming under 2 sub-heading:
(A) The Challenge (B) The Conquest.
(A) THE CHALLENGE
The opponents of God’s people were GIANTS (1Sam.17:4-10, 1Chro.20:8). They looked intimidating in appearance and were actually strong. They had terrifying weapons. They were experienced in battle. They belonged to a family of giants and definitely made a name. These decorations were sufficient to cause the lily-livered to faint just at their sight (cons. 1Sam.17:11).
In like manner, there are confrontations that when assessed with the natural senses could throw somebody off balance. Such could be
negative news, fearful sights, dreadful dreams, laboratory results, the threat of a mortal man, state of health (bad feeling) etc.
These conditions alone stand individually as giants and where they are multiple, would appear as a family of giants. However, whatever one is passing through, the testimony of the scriptures should serve as a soul restorer (1Chro.20:8).
(B) THE CONQUEST
The basis of the conquests was on the fact of confidence in God (cons. 1Sam.17:26,45-47). The men didn’t consider the outward appearance of the challenging giants else they wouldn’t have succeeded. They saw the giants as uncircumcised people, and thus as aliens to the covenant of God (1Sam.17:26 cp. 14:6). Remember the covenant had the promise of divine protection attached (cons. Gen.17:1-2, 7-13).
The awareness of the covenant right of divine protection gave the boldness to confront the giant, and one fell after the other.
The believer in Christ has God’s power backing him (Eph.1:16,17,19-22) more so when he has our kind of mission (Isa.49:5,6). What group of giants, can defy the watchmen when their defence is already departed from them (Num. 14:9)?
Let’s rise up in prayer to take down the giants! As it was with Goliath so shall it be with your enemies!
